John Casper Chenoweth was born in 1848 in Huntington County, Indiana, oldest son of Hezekiah Stites Chenoweth and Sarah Elizabeth Parker. He received his middle name indirectly from his ancestor Casper Rinker. John's father went to Colorado in the 1860s to seek his fortune in the silver mining boom. After sending a letter home saying he would return soon, he vanished. His final fate was never learned, and his wife had him legally declared dead in 1869.

John acquired a step-father when his mother remarried to Daniel Brookhart, a widower who had served in the Union Army during the Civil War and had survived the hell of the Andersonville Prison camp.

John married Mary Eliza Puckett in Decatur County, Iowa, and the couple moved first to Russell County, Kansas in 1878, following his mother's and step-father's earlier move. John and Mary later moved to St. Joseph, Missouri in the early 1890s. They raised seven sons.

John Chenoweth was 59 when he died of heart disease at his home at 3rd and Valley in St. Joseph in 1908. He was buried in New King Hill cemetery. Due to the exceptionally sad condition of this cemetery, due to both neglect and vandalism, the location of his gravestone, if he ever had one, is now unknown.
