John Casper Chenoweth was born in 1848 in Huntington County, Indiana, oldest son of Hezekiah Stites Chenoweth and Sarah Elizabeth Parker. He received his middle name indirectly from his ancestor Casper Rinker. John's father went to Colorado in the 1860s to seek his fortune in the silver mining boom. After sending a letter home saying he would return soon, he vanished. His final fate was never learned, and his wife had him legally declared dead in 1869.
