Joe Devene Stephenson, Sr., 78, passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 in Tulsa, OK. He was born on December 19, 1932 to Willis Mansfield and Cora Ressie (Treat) Stephenson in Prue, Oklahoma.

Joe's parents moved to Harriet, AR when he was 2 years old. He grew up there and graduated from Big Flat High School. In 1952 Joe moved to Tulsa, OK where he worked in a cigar store in the Philtower Building. He also worked as a welder at National Tank where he met Walter Bell, his lifelong friend who still works for Joe at the age of 82.

In 1952 he moved to Stillwater to operate the Phillips Service Station. It was there that he met and married his wife, Betty Lou Combs on August 12, 1956. Wanting to get back to the Tulsa area, Joe and Betty moved to Sand Springs in 1958 to operate the Phillips Service Station that was once at 2nd and Lincoln. It was Sand Springs where they decided to raise their children, Joe Jr., Devena, and Lisa.

Joe later opened the office for Stephenson Oil Co. on Charles Page Boulevard. Joe's business grew from 40 thousand gallons of fuel a month to an average of 18 million gallons a year. Joe had many career long colleagues who he was proud to call friends. Joe was loyal and wanted others to be successful. He was a friend, as well as a business partner. His word was his bond.

During the last several years, Joe's pride and joy was the Stephenson Ranch located in Cleveland, OK. He located the ranch when a flyer fell out of the paper for the auction of a 320 acre ranch. He announced that he was going to "buy that ranch" and he did. He then proceeded to add another thousand acres of land. He commented, "living at the ranch was where he was supposed to be, you didn't need a TV, you could just set and look at the ducks and geese landing on the pond, deer in the pasture and God's nature".

Joe was active in the community. He was a member of Broadway Baptist Church, a 52 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and a former Director of the Oklahoma Petro Markets.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis Mannsfield and Cora Ressie (Treat) Stephenson; his brother Carmel (Steve) Willis Stephenson; his nephew Jerald Stephenson; and his son-in-law, Frank Klemensky.

Joe is survived by his wife Betty of "The Ranch", Cleveland, OK; son, Joe D. Stephenson, Jr. and wife Nicholette of Sand Springs, OK; daughter's, Devena Ann Zarbano of Glenpool, OK; and Lisa Dianne Garcia and husband Josie of Tulsa, OK; five grandsons, Anthony Joseph Zarbano and wife Amanda of Glenpool, OK, Matthew Scott Stephenson and wife Jennifer of Chouteau, OK, Nicholas John Zarbano and wife Elizabeth McElfresh of Tulsa, OK, Django Leo Garcia and Jaco Ernesto Garcia of Tulsa, OK; one granddaughter, Sarah Beth Stephenson of Sand Springs, OK; two twin great-grandchildren, Tucker Chase Stephenson and Hannah Deanne Stephenson of Chouteau, OK; sister, Deanne Bigham and husband Truman (Buck) of Waco, TX; nephew, Larry Stephenson and wife Mary of Salina, OK; nieces, Peggy Masterson and husband Tom of Glenpool, OK, Dianne Ward and husband Rusty of Ft. Worth, TX, Susan Ellison and husband Danny of Waco, TX; and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
