Maria Underhill, daughter of John Underhill and Cynthia Ann Todd, was born 2 April 1825 in New Brunswick, Canada. Her first marriage was to a Whitehouse at Porter, Niagara County, New York. They had a daughter Merinda before his death. Maria married a second time to Andrew John Grindell 5 April 1845 at Porter Township, Niagara County, New York. The family remained there until the 1850s when they moved to Michigan. From their children's birthplaces they evidently were in Maine in 1854 and Michigan by 1857. They were residents of Vergennes Township, Kent County, Michigan in 1860. After her daughter Merinda's death in 1871, she raised her two grandsons, the children of Merinda and Samuel Montague. Maria died 18 February 1902 at Lowell, Kent County, Michigan.
