Merinda T. Whitehouse, the daughter of Maria Underhill and her first husband, a Whitehouse (first name unknown), was born 16 March 1844 in New York state, probably at Porter, Niagara County. She moved to Michigan with her mother and step-father in the mid eighteen fifties. She married Samuel Hungerford Montague on 2 May 1861 in Vergennes, Kent County, Michigan. They had two children, prior to Samuel's enlistment as a private in Company D, 1st Regiment of Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Volunteers; he died 18 July 1865 at Washington, D.C., from disease.

Merinda Whitehouse Montague married Allen P. Watkins, of Lowell, Kent County, Michigan, 4 May 1866 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was married a third time to Frank Booth prior to her death at Lowell February 18, 1871.
