Helen Aplin passed away at home after a short illness on March 26, 2007, in the presence of her family. She leaves behind her husband of 59 years, C. L. (Lee) Aplin; her brother, Joseph Novak of Seal Beach Calif.; daughters Kristin Aplin Thornton and LeeAnn Houck of Auburn, and son Paul Aplin of Palo Alto; her cherished grandchildren Tyler Clark, Alyssa Houck, Erik Aplin, and Gavin Clark; and her great-granddaughter Aela Clark will all miss her; as will her many nieces and nephews. Helen was born in Butte Mont., a populous mining town at the time. She was of Slovenian heritage and enjoyed friends of many cultures. She was a studious child and graduated at the top of her class from Butte Central High School. Helen left Butte during World War II to live in San Francisco, for which she had a life-long affection. She worked as an executive secretary until she met and married Lee in 1948. Helen lived through many historic eras. She vividly remembered the bread lines of the Depression, mine strikes in the late '30s, V-J Day celebrations in San Francisco, and the post-war boom of the '50s. She was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, and stayed interested in politics until the end of her life. She loved her family and especially loved cooking for them. They eagerly sampled her wonderful cooking experiments. Helen told great stories that helped her children and grandchildren appreciate her life. A celebration of Helen's life will be held at the Chapel of the Hills in Auburn on April 23, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Sutter Auburn Faith Hospice and the Ronald McDonald's House were Helen's favorite charities. Published in Gold Country Media Newspapers from April 19 to April 22, 2007
