Memorial services celebrating the life of Hazel G. (McDonald) Messer, 90, of Wadena, and formerly of Bertha, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 1 at the Wadena Evangelical Church with Pastor Chuck Lamason and Reverend Dr. Randy Taber officiating. Hazel passed away on March 25, 2011 in Wadena. She will be missed greatly and remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Hazel was born January 29, 1921, near Verndale to the late Ira and Mable (Mangles) McDonald. She was united in marriage to Wesley Messer on January 1, 1941, in a double ring ceremony with her sister, Ella Buchanan and her husband Charles. Both couples celebrated over 50 years of marriage.
Hazel lived her life helping others, and working hard. Hazel loved to cook, bake, do needlework, knit, craft, journal, travel, read, and was always very lucky in cards. She was a member of the WSCS Church group, Ladies Aid, Homemakers Club, TOPS, and the Humphrey Manor Resident Council.
Hazel's faith was strong and very important to her. She led by example, always being thankful and feeling blessed.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Wesley on June 25, 1997; daughter Jaynell Messer-Haug; son-in-law Allen Haug; grandson Jake Haug; and great-grandson Tyler.
She is survived by her children Richard (Deanne Pfeffer) of Princeton, Thomas of Menomonie, Wisconsin, Edward (Barb Hamper) of Helena, Montana, Rachael "Shelly" (Jeron Winter) of Sartell and Michael (Mary Menshek) of Zimmerman; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brother Charles McDonald of Pengilly; sisters Ella Buchanan of Wadena and Marian Plautz of Zimmerman; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews, cousins; and many friends.
Blessed be the memory of her life and the love she gave so unconditionally.
Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Roline, Roger "Butch" Messer, Bud Theil, Arnie Kephart, Jon Pohlman and Glen Winter. Pallbearers will be Hazel's grandsons and great-grandsons Ron, Ricky, Brandon, Curt and Cory Messer, John and Bill Piere.
Burial will be in the Moran Cemetery.
