Revolutionary War veteran Japhia Condit, son of David Condit and the former Joanna Williams, fought for American independence as a young man in his teens and early twenties, serving as a private under Capt. Squier in the 2nd New Jersey Regiment. Like his younger brother Enoch, he is listed on the Condit monument in the churchyard which honors members of the family who served in the American military during the years 1776-1783. The long-lived Japhia survived Enoch and the end of the Revolutionary War by more than half a century, dying in his 89th year. He was married twice. He and his first wife, the former Dorcas Dodd, were the parents of ten children: Reuben (drowned while still young), Eunice, Lydia, Asenath, Hannah, Silas D., Nancy, David W., and Amzi, born in 1805. Sadly, Dorcas Condit died giving Amzi life. Left a widower with a large family, Japhia married again, taking a widow named Phebe as his second wife. By some accounts she was born Phebe Ogden, and was the widow of Rufus Harrison. Others identify her as a widow named Phebe Miller. One child was born of this union, a girl named Sally who died at fifteen.
