Bessie Marie (Osborn) Royse, 88, of Howard, died Nov. 29, 2008 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastors Robin Haines and Dena Allison will officiate. Burial will be in Elk Falls Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 this evening at the funeral home. Contibutions are suggested to either the Elk Falls United Methodist Church or Howard Senior Citizen Center and may be left with the funeral home.
Mrs. Royse was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Elk Falls, the oldest child of Charles of Ida Mae (Bennett) Osborn. She graduated from Elk Falls High School. After graduating she worked making $1 per week salary.
On Aug. 31, 1941, Bessie and Darrell F. Royse married. Darrell joined the Army and Bessie remained in Elk Falls as postmaster and later joined Darrell in San Antonio. When the war ended, they returned to Elk Falls. Bessie was a homemaker while her children were growing up. She later was the cook for the Elk Falls schools, then Elk Manor Nursing Home. She became postmaster at Elk Falls and retired in 1990 at age 70. After retirement Bessie began making quilts and gave them to family and friends.
Her husband died in 1975, and a daughter, Debra Burke, died in February 2008.
She is survived by two daughters; Darlene Bradley, Howard, and Claudia Ortega, Topeka; one grandson; two brothers, Cecil Osborn, Garfield, Ark., and George Osborn, Collinsville, Okla.; and one sister Barbara Sonders, Belleview, Wash.
