John W. Martus and his wife Elvira were married on April 5, 1888 in Vermillion, Clay County, South Dakota. They decided to homestead out on the prairie. They were building a home for themselves and their 4 children when they were stricken with Typhus Fever. All the family had the illness but only John and Elvira eventually died of the illness. John died in June of 1894 and Elvira died Nov. 14, 1894 leaving the children orphans to be raised by their maternal grandmother Theresa.

Effye was their oldest child. When her grandmother Theresa died all the children including her were taken to a Catholic orphanage. She was raised there until she graduated from school. She eventually became a school teacher, but died before she was married. She is buried next to her mom and dad.

Poor angle with a tragic short life. May you find happiness in heaven.
