John was age twenty when he moved to Greeneville, Tennessee with his father. He wed Catherine Hull on March 17, 1807, in Greene County, Tennessee and had five known children:
1) Benjamin in 1807
2) Alfred on 8 Jun 1810

In 1811, he left with his father, brothers, and sister Sarah Trobaugh for Harrison County, Indiana, but on his way to Nashville, he decided to stay in White County. There they had:
3) George in 1812
4) John Harvey in 1814

In about 1827, John and Catherine moved to Harrison County, Indiana, to be near his brothers. They then had:
5) Samuel in 1828

Catherine died 1830-34 and John moved to nearby Leavenworth in Crawford County, Indiana and wed Elizabeth Stewart on September 18, 1834. He then bought 40 acres in that county in 1837, next to brother Daniel. John later sold this land and bought 80 acres east of his 40 acres and he willed this land to his son John Henry. Elizabeth died in 1884, and is buried in Riddle Cemetery. John is also buried in Riddle Cemetery. There is no stone but this cemetery was stated in the Leavenworth newspaper.
