Note: No locality of grave shown on records, but reported as having died of smallpox. The hospital for these cases was moved to the island in the Mississippi River opposite Alton during the month of August, 1863. Beginning with November, 1863, records show that burial was made on this island of those who died from effects of smallpox.

"Served in Forrest Cavalry during the Civil War. While at home on leave, he carried some clothing to his older brother, Patrick Henry, who was still in service, and on his return home, he was captured by the Federal forces in West Tennessee and sent to the military prison at Alton, Illinois, at which place he died. His family did not know of his death until the close of the war when some of the men who were in prison with him returned."

William Drury Andrews died of typhoid fever in the Alton hospital, Sept. 6, 1863. His name appears on both the smallpox island monument and the Confederate Cemetery monument in Alton. The date on the Small Pox Island monument presumably indicates his date of burial there, Sept. 7.
