ANDREWS:: Mrs. Martha A Andrews nee Cooper was born in Sussex county, Virginia July 1st 1815. She professed religion when a little girl immediately connected herself with the Methodist Church of that State.
She was happily married to I. H. Andrews in the year 1836. In 1844, they left their native state and settled in Middle Tennessee where they resided until 1852 when they came to West Tenn. and settled in Hardeman county. They immediately joined Mt. Carmel (Cawleys) Methodist Church. For ten years they were active workers there and enjoyed the love and respect of all.
It then pleased the great head of the church to call the husband from labor to rest.
Sister Andrews then came to Whiteville Tenn. and had ever since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Sallie Duncan from whence she went to Heaven Dec 27th 1896.
She was the mother of ten children; three boys and seven girls; all of whom she was successful in raising to be grown. Eight still live to mourn the irreparable loss of a good mother.
Not a word or murmur of complaint was ever heard to escape her lips. She was not demonstrative, but her light was never under a bushel, but always shining around and others could see her good works. Modest, quiet, prudent, and practical, she was an efficient worker in the vineyard of the Lord. Her prayers, her self sacrifice, willing at all times and at all places to sacrifice her own comforts and pleasures for that of others, her toil, her words of sympathy and comfort to the afflicted, the bleeding hearts she has bound up can never be written on this page but are recorded in the book of the God of Remembrance. Cheer up sorrowing ones and only follow her as she followed Christ and you will meet her again where parting will be no more.
After an appropriate funeral service conducted by the writer assisted by her good friend, Rev. W. M. Norment, she was followed by a long prosession of friends to Crowder Cemetery two miles west of Whiteville where we laid her body, peacefully away to await the resurrection of the just.
