Born in Pitt Co. and named after his father, Richard and his widowed mother were living in Edgecombe Co, NC in 1860 and 1870. By 1880 Richard was in Wake Co. where his occupation was documented as oculist. His mother, wife, 2 children and nephew Ivey Foreman, age 14, were included in this census. He married Cornelia on Feb 13, 1877. This union produced four children, Richard Henry Lewis born Feb 1878, Martha B. Lewis born March 1879, Kemp Battle Lewis born Sep 1880 and Ivey Foreman Lewis born Aug 1881. After Cornelia's passing he took a second wife Mary Long Gordon in Charlottesville, VA. This union produced his daughter, Nell Battle Lewis, who was most likely named after his first wife. The 1900 record recorded his name as Rufus Henry Lewis which would make it more difficult for anyone researching this family and his wife was named as Maggie. In 1910 his wife is recorded as Annie B. and they were married for 12 years. This was her 2nd marriage and his third. Annie or perhaps Martha Annie was the daughter of Thomas Sparrow and Annie Blackwell. Annie being the widow of William Foreman whom she married in Edgecombe Co Jan 31,1865. Annie's death occured on Oct 30, 1917 in Wake Co. She is most likely buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Beaufort Co. where her son Ivey Foreman is buried. In 1920 Richard was head of the household which included his youngest child Nell Battle Lewis, Margaret Payne sis-in-law and niece Annie B. Payne.
