Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Doehne was born 13 JUN 1834 in Wenigenhasungen, Germany, the son of Johann George Döhne and his wife Anna Maria Kuhneweg. He immigrated to the United States in 1853, becoming one of the earliest settlers in the area of Comal County known as Smithson's Valley. On 10 Jun 1860, John married Katherine Gass, a widow with one son. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1865.

John loved music and singing, and was listed as a member of the "Gesangenverein Echo" (Smithson Valley Singing Club) in 1869. In 1871, John received a patent for 160 acres in Comal County, which he farmed the rest of his life.

John and Katherine had nine children together: Wilhelmina (Mrs. Karl Herman Stieler) 1861-1946; Julius (Pauline Foerster) 1862-1952; Frederich (Adele Heimer) 1863-1927; Emma (Mrs. Charles Schladoer) 1865-1934; Ernestine (Mrs. Richard Schladoer) 1867-1960; Ernest (Gertrude Gerlich) 1870-1944; Anna (never married) 1872-1932; Louise (Mrs. Ernst Thiele) 1875-1951; and John Henry (Mathilda Altwein) 1877-1941.

Katherine died in 1892. In 1894, John was Included in a list of "Delegates to the Democratic State Convention" according to the Galveston Daily News, 14 Aug 1894.

John remained active for most of his life. As he got older, he lived with one or the other of his children until his death 25 Aug 1925, when he was buried next to Katherine in the family cemetery on his land.
