Slim homesteaded in Cecil Lake from 1928 until his death in 1985. He lived in a cabin and led a simple life close to the land that he loved. He helped many young men turn their lives around. His little cabin was open to one and all.Slim was a story teller and wrote articles for the newspaper as well as two books about pioneers. Slim received the Order of Canada in 1981, for his pioneering spirit and dedication to the community. Slim passed away in 1985 after a battle with stomach cancer. A great man, sorely missed by friends and family.
"I feel a man is like a tree in the forest. When it gets old and its roots get weak, it falls to the earth and simply makes room for young trees to grow tall and strong in its place. This is nature's way and nature is seldom wrong." - quote from Slim's book "Old Trails"
