Gladys was the eldest daughter of Martin and Nannie Byrnes. Her mother died when she was fifteen, so she took over the raising of her four younger siblings. She married Tom and they had three daughters. They farmed in the Saskatoon Lake district outside of Grande Prairie,AB before retiring in to town and then to Calgary.
