He played in Major League Baseball for nineteen seasons as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Tigers, California Angels, Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, and Atlanta Braves. He won 114 games, lost 144, and saved 108. He gave up the first career home run to Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, and the 200th to former home run king Hall of Famer Hank Aaron.
