An article in the 12 Aug 1936 edition of the Steubenville Herald-Star titled "Pioneer Days, Turning Back the Pages of History in Ohio Valley," included: "Here is to the Becketts of Jefferson county. At Winchester in the Shenandoah valley in 1770, William Beckett was born, grew to manhood, married Elizabeth Sprinkle and conducted a hotel. In 1802 he emigrated to Short creek, West Virginia across from Warrenton, on the Ohio river. He had at that time five children, Isaac, Erasmus, Sarah, Katherine, Nancy. There he again engaged in the hotel business, continuing for thirteen years. Then he bought a farm in Jefferson county and moved to it, where five more children were born, John, William, Eliza, George and Mary. His son Isaac died in his 21st year, and William Beckett Sr., died in 1815."
