Papa brought Chip home to our family because Chip's master was headed to sea with no one to look after him. He was a year old when he came to us. Part dachshund looking face, part terrier, short stocky legs, he was an active happy dog who loved to run. If you left the backyard, he would invariably escape through the gate with you and around the block he'd run, never stopping when called. He did however stop once for a young man walking down the street. Chip stopped and sat down at this stranger's feet as if he knew him. I thanked the man for being in the military. The man asked how I knew he was Navy, I said I didn't know it, but Chip must have known.

Chip liked to eat scrambled eggs with ketchup. He loved to chase our indoor cat, Prissy Missy, through the den. He always stayed in the den and wouldn't cross the line into the kitchen for anything. One time he came up the stairs looking very guilty, but coughing. Mom ran downstairs to find that someone had left a pot on the stove and smoke was billowing out! Chip had rescued the kitchen by alerting us to the potential danger!

Chip also liked to chew up new plants. Mom and Papa had planted a young maple tree in the backyard. Chip kept it chewed down to the ground. We isolated him in the side yard for a few weeks and boy did that tree finally take off. Later, full grown men climbed that tree and enjoyed the view. The tree must've been growing some strong roots while Chip was keeping it trimmed.
