Peter Sprankle, son of Johan Georg ("George") Sprankle & Susanna Null, was born October 2, 1795 in W. Manchester Twp., York Co., PA. He was baptized on November 8, 1795 at St. Paul's (Wolf's) Church.

Peter grew up on his father's farm, assisted in farm work from an early age, and obtained a common school education.

About 1820, he married Frances Bridenbaugh. They were the parents of six children: Susan Sprankle (wife of James Allen), Mary Ann Sprankle (wife of Matthew Martin), John D. Sprankle, Peter Sprankle, Jr., George Sprankle, and Michael Sprankle.

The family resided for twelve years in Porter township, between Barree and Alexandria, and later purchased the "Foot Farm," in Porter township. Peter was a prosperous farmer who was well-respected and active in state politics.

In 1850, following the opening of the Northwest Territory, Peter Sprankle traveled to Indiana with his eldest son, John D. Sprankle and purchased 400 acres of land near Ft. Wayne. John D. Sprankle settled there and raised a family while developing one of the valuable farms in Allen county.

Peter Sprankle returned to Pennsylvania where he lived out the rest of his days with his son, Peter Sprankle, Jr., on his farm.

Peter Sprankle died on July 14, 1874 at the age of 78 and is buried alongside his wife in Shaffersville Cemetery, in the town of Water Street, Pennsylvania. Their son George remembered them as "devout and excellent people, faithful to their family, their church, and the community."

Shaffersville Cemetery is located on U.S. Route 22, eleven miles northwest of Huntingdon, PA. My parents, Ken and Jane Sprankle, visited the cemetery in July 1982 and took a picture of Peter Sprankle's gravesite.

Our family papers include an original copy of Johan Peter Sprankle's Last Will dated October 20, 1874, handed down to me by my father.
