Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Aug 20 2009 - Velma Mary Byrum, 90, Leesville, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Windsor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Windsor. Velma was born on June 5, 1919, in Racket, the daughter of Jud and Mabel (Cochran) Summers. She was married to Herbert Weeks Byrum on September 23, 1938, in Gunnison, Colorado. They lived in Colorado and New Mexico before moving to their farm in Henry County in the early 1940s. Velma was a kind and considerate friend to many people. She was a loving family woman, maintaining close relationships with her many cousins and extended family. Her greatest love was always her children and grandchildren. She was so proud of the three sets of great-grandchildren the family was blessed with, but rejoiced at the birth of every new baby in the family and always welcomed them with open arms. During her life she enjoyed fishing, sewing, quilting, crossword puzzles and particularly music. She played the piano at many a family gathering. Velma made a wonderful friend in May Wiskur in the twilight of her life. The family will be forever grateful for her kindness. Velma was a Christian. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Leesville. She is survived by one son, Herbert Byrum and his wife, Angelia, Tightwad; six daughters, Veryl Willis and her husband, John, Leesville, LaRea Williams of Leesville, Myrna Preston and her husband, Jerry, Lee's Summit, Phyllis Ebeling and her husband, Harold, Windsor, Vickie Schley and her husband, Michael, Leesville, Mary Love and her husband, Russell, Harrisonville; four sisters, LaVerne McLerran, Clinton, Arkansas, Perrie Lee Benson, Camdenton, Clarice North and her husband, Charles, Windsor, Jane Huey and her husband, Earl, Clinton; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert; one son-in-law, Jim Williams, and three infant children. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 22, at the Leesville Church of Christ in Leesville, with burial to follow at Shady Grove Cemetery.
