Phyllis Ebeling, 65, of rural Windsor, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at the KU Medical Center, due to complications from her brave battle with cancer.

On September 5, 1947, in Clinton, Mo., Herbert W. Byrum and Velma Mary (Summers) Byrum were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. She was carefully placed in the nursery with one other baby born that day. Soon a crowd gathered, staring in disbelief at the two babies in the nursery. The other baby born was premature and tiny, while Phyllis weighed in at a whooping 13 pounds – a record for the hospital.

She grew up in a small house on the Byrum family farm in Leesville with her 5 sisters and 1 brother. Her rural upbringing fostered very close relationships with them, which continued her entire life.

On October 8, 1965, in Leesville, Mo., she married Harold Lee Ebeling of Lincoln, Mo. Soon after, they started their family with the birth of their two sons, Shannon Harold and Jerrod Scott. Together they built a successful family farming business. She was very proud of her sons and all the success they've achieved in their personal, business and civic lives.

Phyllis was a devout member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church for many years. She was an excellent Sunday school teacher and organized vacation bible school each summer for the church.

Phyllis was unbeatable at parade float building. Along with her grand-children, she constructed the floats out of recycled and repurposed materials from her farm. It was a source of personal pride for her to construct her elaborate floats without spending one dime on the materials. Each year she entered her masterpiece in the annual Windsor parade and heaven help the other float builders who competed against her. Her artistic talents continued into other areas including scissor cutting, paper dolls and intricate snowflake garland strands.

We all remember her hard work and efforts putting together the largest annual country garage sale around. She also loved morel mushroom hunting, going to auctions and digging through the boxes of junk and finding hidden treasures. The stuff that was left over from her auction finds ended up in the annual garage sale.

She also loved listening to the scanner, collecting what-knots and little old things with character and vintage metal toys.

More than anything, Phyllis loved her grandchildren. She was a most dedicated grandmother, teacher and playmate, spending many a day helping them with school projects, playing board games and filling water balloons for their summertime water balloon fights. She admired Sheldon, her eldest grandchild, for his hardworking spirit and kind and quiet nature. In her illness, Sheldon was the first to step in and help his grandpa with chores on the farm and running the trash route. Ty, the middle grandchild, is the one who inherited Phyllis's hilarious sense of humor. She always knew she could count on him for a good laugh and to find the funny in everyday situations. Phyllis was very proud of his involvement in the school band playing drums. She also loved to talk about his wide variety of animals, stating "animals love Ty." Haley, her first granddaughter, is the most athletic of all the grandchildren. She loved watching Haley play softball and other sports. Haley's pretty blue eyes and beautiful complexion are mirror images of Phyllis as a young girl. Khloe, her youngest granddaughter, she considers to be the "miracle baby." She was overjoyed when Khloe came along and was taken with the fact she looked just like her son Jerrod. Phyllis always enjoyed receiving a new piece of artwork from Khloe and proudly displayed it for all to see.

She is survived by her husband, Harold, of the home; two sons, Shannon Ebeling and his wife Shelley; their children, Sheldon, Ty and Haley Ebeling; Jerrod Ebeling and his wife Lori and their daughter Khloe, all of Windsor, Mo.; 5 sisters, Veryl Willis and her husband John, Leesville, Mo.; LaRea Williams, Leesville, Mo.; Myrna Preston and her husband Jerry, Lee's Summit, Mo.; Vicky Schley and her husband Mike, Leesville, Mo.; Mary Love and her husband Russell, Harrisonville, Mo.; one brother, Herbert Byrum and his wife Angelia, Tightwad, Mo.; her in-laws, Marvin and Sharon Ebeling, Peggy Ebeling, Joyce Ebeling, Leroy Anderson, and Don and Ethyl Freeman; 4 aunts, LaVerne McLerran, Perrie Lee Benson, Clarice North and Jane Huey; and an abundance of cherished nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Velma Byrum; 3 infant siblings; brothers-in-law, Jim Williams, Homer Ebeling, Bob Ebeling, and Ben Cockrum; and sisters-in-law, Goldie (Ebeling) Cockrum and Dorothy (Ebeling) Anderson.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2012, at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor, Mo., with Rev. Murlin Anstine and Rev. Chris Arey officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
