Sudden Death of John Leon
Heart Attack Takes Fine Citizen as He Was Thought to Be Convalescing at Local Hospital-
Was Cheese Buyer When Little Falls Market Was Greatest in World
John Leon, lifelong resident and one of the best loved men of this city, passed peacefully out of life at the hospital at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The adjective "peacefully" is not used contemplatively in describing the manner of Mr. Leon's death, for it came wholly unexpected as he sat in a chair in his room. His son Melville, of Binghamton, left his father only a few moments previous to the death of the latter, who seemed to be well on the road to recovery from an operation performed six weeks ago. Efforts to recall the son thru teletype messages sent by Chief Long and state troopers proved unavailing and Melville was not apprised of his father's death till he reached Binghamton. The body was removed to Newitt's and his devoted children summoned.
John Leon lived a well rounded useful life. For over 60 years he was a worker, at one kind of employment.
He was born in a house at the corner of Ward and Court streets on the 18th of December 1861, eldest son of Jacob and Bridget Mahoney Leon. The father was employed by Jacob Zoller produce and cheese dealer, and John became connected with the same business when he was only 14 years of age. Mr. Zoller, wonderful judge of the capabilities of men quickly recognized John Leon as a boy of superior qualities and results showed he did not err in his judgment with the reference to Mr. Leon, who became one of the ablest of Mr. Zoller's executives.
For many years he did all of Mr. Zoller's buying on the Little Falls cheese market. In his capacity as buyer for the House of Zoller , Mr. Leon became widely known among the rural residents of Central New York. His high sense of honor, his engaging personality won him a high place in the business world. the product he bought for Mr. Zoller found a market in every state in the union. After closing his 51 years of association with the Zoller house Mr. Leon lived partly retired, but his nature was such that he could not content himself with living wholly retired and he at one time acted as an inspector of the A. B. C. board and had held other positions.
Mr. Leon was an enthusiastic member of the Masonic order, and was a past master of the local blue lodge. He had also held offices in the chapter and was a member of the Little Falls Commandery, K. T. and the Utica Shrine. He was equally devoted to the welfare of St. Paul's Universalist church, of which he was for many years an official. He was a Republican in politics and was at one time a candidate for the nomination for county treasurer. He was also a member of the Walter Wagon club and frequently accompanied that organization on it's St. Lawrence River camping tours.
On the 4th of September 1881, Mr. Leon was united in marriage to Miss Sarah McConnell of this city, who died in 1926. Their beautiful domestic life will ever remain a pleasant and prized memory to their five children who are, Mrs. Launt Lindsay of Geneva, John Z. and Irving of Cleveland, Harry, Westfield, N. J. and Melville W. of Binghamton. There also survives one sister, Mrs. Mary Van Alstine, of Ft Plain. A prayer service will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Newitt funeral home, with funeral services at St. Paul's Universalist church, in charge of the local lodge of Masons. Rev. Mr. Gilman will officiate and burial will be made at Fairview cemetery, accounting department of which particularly while it was being established, Mr. Leon was in charge.
Friends may view the body at the Newitt funeral home from 7 to 10 tonight.
