He was born Jan. 28, 1925, in Madison, the son of James E. "Ned" and Maude Elizabeth Richter Bellamy. He was a 1942 graduate of Madison High School and a 1950 journalism graduate of Butler University. He began his career as a newspaper reporter, photographer, sports editor and occasional cartoonist. He was the editor of several magazines, including Indiana Business & Industry, and manager of publications for Union Oil Co. in Chicago, a journalism instructor at Ancilla College in Donaldson, a substitute teacher for Madison Consolidated School and a truck driver for Auxier Gas Service Inc. in Hanover. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1969, Madison Elks Lodge 72, Phi Gamma Delta college fraternity and Sigma Delta Chi national honorary journalism society. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dona E. Viau Bellamy; two daughters, Anna Elizabeth Bellamy Lucas of Madison and Suzanne Bellamy Hicks of North Manchester; three sons, James William Bellamy of Madison, David Kirby Bellamy of Knightstown and Mark Samuel Bellamy of Indianapolis; one sister, Opal Bellamy Duthie of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; five granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Suzanna Peddie Bellamy; their infant son, Jon Andrew Bellamy; and one brother, James Edward "Ed" Bellamy Jr.
