John was the son of George Armstrong and Anna Cisney.

He married Martha Kier on April 9, 1857 in Holmes County, OH.

John and Martha's children were Anna E., Mary Ann, John Wesley, Loretta May, William Kier, Rudy, Louisa, and Harry J.

John and his family lived in Salt Creek Twp., Holmes Co., where he worked as a farmer. In the 1870's, he moved his family to Trumbull County and his mother, Anna, came with them having buried her husband in Holmes County. The family settled in West Mecca, OH where he obtained a large piece of land and operated his farm there. The site is now in the ownership of the Black family and is located on Bazetta Rd., South of the intersection with St. Rt. 88.

John donated part of his land for the United Presbyterian Church which he built with the help of William Case and John Genger. This church was located about 500 feet South of West Mecca Corners. Rev. Knapp preached at this church for some time before it eventually disbanded and the building was moved to North of the corners where it is now a private home.

After his wife's death, John went to live with his daughter Mary, her husband Joseph Hill, and their children in Greene Twp., OH.
