Grady Trantham, age 95, died on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Newton James and Nora Russell Trantham. He was also preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. He retired from Champion International with 31 years of service. He enjoyed vegetable farming and raising livestock. Grady was never at a loss for words, never met a stranger, loved to tell stories, and always helped others when there was a need. He loved being outdoors looking at the mountains and bird watching. He served in the United States Army Air Corp, 15th Air Force in the 451 bomb GP serving 10 campaigns including Italy, Africa, and France. Grady was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family very much.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, a son,two sisters, two brothers, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Tony Stancel officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Sam and Becky Trantham, 1672 Worley Cove Road, Canton. Pallbearers will be Josh and Zack Trantham, Barry Hurd, Herb Stancel, Henry Dickard, and Willie Holt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
