Following info from Nelson Harshman.
On Aug. 19, 1852 he married Hannah Bowles, who died May 6, 1856, apparently from complications of her second child's birth. On Jan. 20, 1861 Alva was married again, to Sarah J. Saddler, born in 1839. On May 10, 1864 Alva enlisted in the Union Army and served until the end of the war as Pvt. Co. D, 2nd Ohio Cav, 197th Regt. He was in the Grand Review at Washington and was hon. Discharged at Benton Harbor Sept. 11, 1865.
