- Leroy C. Slocum, 86, highly esteemed West Lafayette citizen, for more than 35 years identified with local banks, died Sunday morning at 2 o'clock at the family home, 443 West Wood street, after a serious illness of 10 days. He had been in failing health for the past four years. Born February 21, 1848, in LaPorte, he came to Tippecanoe county when he was a boy and had lived in West Lafayette for the past 40 years. At one time he was a teller in the old Perrin bank after which he became cashier of the City National bank, holding that position for 25 years. When this establishment became the City Trust company he was made treasurer, retiring from this office about two years ago. Mr. Slocum had long been Interested in civic growth and community progress and was formerly a member of the West Lafayette school board. He was one of the oldest members of Trinity M. E. church and belonged to Tippecanoe lodge 492, F. and A. M. In 1874 he married Emma Josephine Reedie who died in July, 1876, one daughter, now Mrs. Jesse R. Moore of Detroit, being born to the union. In 1878 he married Miss Flora V. Beeker, who survives, and nine children being born to this union.
The surviving children are: Mrs. Howell Gholson, Clarksville, Tenn.; Mrs. Bert W. Smith, Chicago; Paul B. Slocum, Decatur, III.; Mrs. Edith Snyder, Orono, Maine; and Mrs. Moore, In Detroit. There are 13 grandchildren. The remains were removed to the Soller-Baker funeral home where friends may call after 6 o clock Monday evening. Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home Wednesday morning at 10 o :lock and will be strictly private. Dr. T. F. Williams of Trinity Church officiating. Burial will be in Spring Vale cemetery.
