Paul Wayne Wachter, age 77, of Berkeley Springs, WV, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011 at his residence while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle and his family.

Born December 13, 1933 in Morgan County, WV, he was the son of the late Harry Calvin and Ollie Martha Barnes Wachter.

He graduated from Berkeley Springs High School in 1953. Wayne was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1955. He worked for Dupont for many years. In 1963 he graduated from Shepherd College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history. He earned Master's Degrees in history and social studies from Shippensburg University in 1974. Wayne taught school at Clear Spring Middle School and retired from there as Vice Principal.

As a young boy he fired the furnaces at the Roman Baths in the Berkeley Springs State Park and The Park View Inn. Over the years of his adult life he spent summers working with his brother Ford, who owned Wachter Well Drilling. In 1983 he opened Mt. State Water Well Drilling which he operated for over 25 years in Morgan County. Wayne served on the WV State Board of Well Drillers for many years. He was a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council #117 in Berkeley Springs and had served as past councilor of Tonoloway Council #102 in Great Cacapon. Wayne was a charter member of Mountain State Cruisers and a member of the Moose Lodge. He liked antique cars, horse-drawn carriages, old clocks and good food.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnn Shanholtz Wachter; one daughter, Lisa Jo Wachter Braithwaite and husband Lewis, of Berkeley Springs, WV; one sister, Emily "Peach" Scott and husband Joe, of Albuquerque, NM; six sister-in-laws, Carol Dorsey, Betty Perry, Twila Andrews, Oleta Jean Shanholtz, Arietta Shanholtz and Betty Wachter and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Wayne Wachter on April 28, 1976; four brothers, Lewis, Maxwell L., George Woodrow and H. Ford Wachter and two sisters, Lucille Hines and Margaret Dailey.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV with the Rev. Dan Wright officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Pahandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25403 or to The Family of Andrew Butler, c/o George I. McVey, Esq., 171 S. Washington Street, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
