Son of Abigail McDonald and Elisha C. Terry.

Married twice. First about 1884 to Frances "Fannie" Gibson until her death in 1892. They were the parents of four: Elisha Clay Terry, Starling Luther Terry, Claud Terry and Nellie Terry Easterling. Elisha Clay and Claud died as children.

Gus married widow Margaret McRainey "Maggie" (nee Goodman) Wishart on November 22, 1893, in Roberdell NC. She had two children from her first marriage to Giles Eli Wishart. Three years later Gus died.

Gus and Fannie's two surviving children, Luther and Nellie, went to live in their paternal grandfather Elisha C. Terry's household. Elisha was County Commissioner of Richmond County.

Surviving wife Maggie moved with her two children, Walter Lee and Annabel Wishart, to New Orleans where she is seen in the city directory and census records with the Wishart surname. She is Margaret M. Terry on her Louisiana death record and tombstone.

-------------------------------

Gus' dates of birth and death are from a family pedigree prepared in 1977 by his nephew and family historian Elisha Rowland Baxley, son of Gus' older sister Cornelia Ann Terry Baxley.

No burial record has been found but Gus' first wife Fannie, baby son Claud (who both predeceased him) and parents are buried together at Bear Branch. Gus is most likely there also. Baby son Elisha Clay is at nearby Green Lake UMC Cemetery with extended family.

Note: Bear Branch Cemetery was searched twice for Gus and no marker found. Green Lake UMC Cemetery was photographed in 2010 and Gus was not found there either. His name does not appear on any of the Richmond County cemetery surveys conducted in the 1980-90s and found at www.ncgenweb.us.

-----------------------------

The story below is from the papers of Joe McLaurin, Richmond County historian, that were donated to the NC State Archives in Raleigh NC. It describes the burial of a Terry man at Bear Branch Cemetery in 1895-1897. That man was either Gustave B. Terry or his brother James L. Terry. Both died in 1896.

Mr. McLaurin interviewed John Benjamin Smith, Sr. who "remembers when he was young that a Mr. Terry died away from Richmond County. His body came in on the train, and this would have been between about 1895-1897. The remains arrived on the train about 10:00 at night and the people were expecting it. So the remains were put on a horse and wagon and drove to Bear Branch Cemetery, where the family and others were waiting to have the funeral at midnight. All the people at the cemetery were carrying torches, so to be able to see and it was an eerie sight to be in a cemetery with lots of people carrying the torches at midnight. Doesn't know who the man was."
