Based on AncestryDNA matches, Tom Terry was the son of Elisha C. Terry and Hannah Terry, also known as Hannah McDonald. Hannah was an enslaved woman belonging to James Leak Terry Sr., father of Elisha C. Terry. Her son Tom was bequeathed in James Terry's 1864 last will and testament to Elisha C. Terry.

Census records beginning with the 1860 Slave Schedule indicate Tom was born in 1855, not 1860 as shown on his tombstone.
