PRISCILLA QUEER DIED OF EXPOSURE
Aged Woman Missing Nearly Two weeks Found Dead in a Field
The lifeless body of Mrs. Priscilla (Vought) Burkholder, Queer, aged 92 years, residing with her grandson, William Burkholder, near Center Church, who disappeared between 4 and 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon, November 3, was found Thursday evening, November 15, in a field on the Farm of George Haer, who lives near the Burkholder home. Discovery of the body, which was badly decomposed, was made by Mr. Haer's son, Emmett, aged 20 years, who was tramping through the field on a hunting expedition. The youth immediately summoned members of the Burkholder family by whom identification of the aged woman was positively established. Coroner H. S. Kimmell, of Somerset, was notified and the body was turned over to Undertaker J. L. Tressler, of Meyersdale, Coroner Kimmell came here and held an inquest, the jury finding that the woman's death was caused by exposure. It is believed by relatives of Mrs. Queer that she became bewildered while going from the home of William Burkholder to the residence of another grandson, Harvey Burkholder, residing nearby, and got lost. When she failed to return home a search was started and had continued for days, but no trace of the aged woman was found. Mrs. Queer was born in Elk Lick Township, on March 28, 1836. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Vought. She was married twice, her first husband, William Burkholder, passing away 10 year ago, Herman Queer, died eight years ago. Mrs. Queer is survived by these children of the first marriage: Jacob and Harvey Burkholder and Mrs. Austin Walters, all residing near Center Church and Mrs. Savilla Hemminger, living near Boswell. She had no children by her second marriage. She also leaves one sister, Miss Mary Vought, an inmate of the Old Folks; Home at Scalp Level who is in the 80's. Mrs. Queer was a member of the church of the Brethren and had been active in church work for many years. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Center Church, conducted by the Rev. T. R. Coffman, pastor Meyersdale Church of the Brethren. Interment in the Center Church Cemetery.
