Marie Ellen Heather passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, surrounded by the soothing voices of her children sharing laughter and fond memories of her long, loving life.

Born of a farm north of Unadilla on December 21, 1919, she was the second oldest of Earl and Minnie Halvorsen's six children. Marie was a bright student and a hard worker, eventually leaving Unadilla to attend Nebraska City High School in order to take college prep classes. After graduation, she attended business college in Lincoln before marrying Delbert H. Heather on February 8, 1941. After taking the train to Omaha and attending the Ice Capades for their honeymoon, the couple returned to their farm southwest of Syracuse.

There, Marie and Delbert raised six children. In addition to tending to her family and the farm, Marie worked more than 35 years for the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) in Syracuse. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, gardening, music, and volunteering for the Syracuse Methodist Church. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Marie is survived by her husband of 70 years, Delbert; daughter Lucy and husband Stuart Kitt, St. Louis, MO; daughter Jane Heather, Ft. Worth, TX; daughter Jody and husband Wally Pohlman, Nebraska City; son Wayne and wife Pat Heather, Ft. Worth, TX; and daughter Sandy Heather and husband R.K. Piper, Omaha. She was preceded in death by two infants, James and Wesley, and one son, Keith Heather.

A celebration of life will be held at the Syracuse United Methodist Church, 6th & Chestnut, at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 18. The family suggests memorials to the Syracuse Library Foundation, 496 6th St, Syracuse, NE 68446.
