Squire W. A. Rex died Sunday

Wilson A. Rex, one of the oldest justice of the peace in this county, died at his home at Slatedale Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock after an illness for some months with dropsey but was only bedfast for four days. He served as justice of the peace in Washington township for 37 years. He was one of the outstanding men of the upper end and a large circle of friends mourn his passing.

Squire Rex was born at Slatedale, a son of Reuben and his wife Lucy, nee Peter, Rex on Feb. 28, 1862. In his early life he was a school teacher and taught in the township for 19 terms in five different schools, his last position having been at Emerald where he taught the higher grade.

In 1890 he served as census enumerator for the upper district of Washington township. For nine years he was township auditor. He was a director of the Dime Savings bank for a number of years and was also one of the organizers of Citizens National Bank in town. He was the last of the original organizers and directors and served as the first president of the bank. He was a member of the Progressive Building Asso. of Allentown. He was one of the organizers of the Slatedale Electric Light Co. He served as secretary and treasurer and helped to build the company's plant which was later sold to the Penna. Power and Light Co.

He also helped to organize the Slatedale Rural Telephone Co., later merged with the Bell Co.

The funeral will be held from his late home this afternoon at 2 o'clock with further services in Holy Trinity Luther and Reformed church, Slatedale with interment in the Slatedale cemetery. Rev. E. S. Kidd, his pastor officiating.

He was a prominent Republican of the county and was an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago which nominated Charles Evans Hughes for the presidency. He also frequently served as delegate to the State Republican convention and the Grange conventions.

He was a faithful member of the Heidelberg Church and served as a deacon for four years. For the last 18 years he was trustee of Holy Trinity Lutheran and Reformed church at Slatedale. He attended Sunday school at Heidelberg Church, Lehigh Furnace and was an official in these schools. He also served as a delegate to the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania and the Allentown conference.

Mr. and Mrs. Rex celebrated their golden wedding on Oct. 12 1934, when a large number of their friends gathered to join in the celebration. At that time a number of prominent citizens paid high tribute to the couple.

Squire Rex enjoyed the esteem and confidence of the entire community. All his life he spent in the section where he was born. He was the counsellor and confident of many people and it may be said of him that he gained his fine reputation by dealing justly with his fellow men.

Squire Rex enjoyed an unusually fine health record until his fatal illness. He was never confined to bed for a day until last week.

He was married to Laura A. Miller, sister of David A. and Samuel P. Miller, on Oct. 11, 1884. She survives him with these children: Mrs. Carrie Wertman of Slatedale; Lottie wife of Dr. Rollo O. Peters, who reside at the home, and Beryl, wife of Robert Gower of Palmerton. There are 12 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.
