Nickolas was born in Hellendorf, Germany and came to America by himself at the age of 16. He returned a few years later and talked the rest of his family into coming to America also. He went on to become the Mayor of Edwardsville, Illinois in 1903 for 1 term and declined any further terms. He owned a saloon at the time of his death. He died of cancer of the throat.
