THE PADUCAH SUN ~ Tuesday, August 12, 1975.
Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.

MARION, Ky. A Crittenden County farm owner was found dead in his car about 11 p.m. Monday, the victim of an apparent suicide. Jessie Wayne Alvis, 53, a resident of Henderson who operated two river bottom farms in Crittenden County, left his house Monday morning, according to his wife, Mrs. Judith Rowland Alvis, telling her he was going to inspect his farm. When he did not return home in the evening, Mrs. Alvis called Sheriff Austin Cook. She said her husband had been despondent and in poor health for the past year and she knew he had taken a gun with him to the farm. Sheriff Cook went to the farm and picked up H. B. Phillips, who ran the farming operation for Alvis.
Phillips said he had not seen Alvis since about 9 a.m. The two men found Alvis with a gunshot wound in his head and .38 caliber pistol in the car. Crittenden County Coroner Dr. Wes Creager declared the death an apparent suicide which had occurred about noon that day.

Besides his wife, Alvis is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Judith Ann Hendrick, Sarasota, and Miss Jennie Marie Alvis, at home.

Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tucker Funeral Home in Marion. The Rev. Marvin Whitmer and the Rev. Tom Eblin will officiate with burial to follow in Mapleview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
