Johann Samuel HAUPT Sr. was married May 1764 in Windesheim, Rheinland, Preussen to Margaretha APPEL b. Germany, d. 1794 Upper Dublin Twp., Montgomery Co., PA, bd. Lutheran Church Cemetery, Upper Dublin, Montgomery Co., PA (my 4G grandparents).
Johann Sr.'s parents were Johannes HAUPT Sr. Esq. b. 16 May 1686 Windesheim, Rheinland, Preussen, d. 23 May 1727 Windesheim, Rheinland, Preussen & Anna Margaretha GEISS b. abt. 1688 Windesheim, Rheinland, Preussen.
Johannes & Anna were married 6 Nov 1708 Windesheim, Rheinland, Preussen.
Margaretha's father was Johann Nicol APPEL.Johann Samuel Haupt was born in Windesheim, Rheinland. He was the youngest son of Johannes Haupt (b. 1686 d. 1727). He was a brother to Johann Heinrich Sebastian Haupt (b. 1715) and Johann Nicholas Haupt (b. 1709) and a first cousin to Johann Nicholas Haupt (b. 1725) and Johannes Haupt (b. 1734). The brothers and cousins listed above all came to Philadelphia in the 1740's - 1750's. Johann Samuel Haupt arrived on Sept. 30, 1754.

One of Samuel's sons was Philip Haupt who moved to Shamokin Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. He maintained the Haupt spelling. The other sons of Samuel Haupt used the spelling Houpt.

The Haupt family line of Windesheim, Rheinland were descended from the Haupt family that were the Lords and Counts of Pappenheim in Middle Franconia (now in Bavaria). Heinrich Haupt was the 1st Lord of Pappenheim in the 1130's. This was a Hereditary line of Lords. The hereditary lordship title was awarded by Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig IV in 1332. This was awarded because the Haupt family of Pappenheim could document their family line back to the late 1080's - to a time of critical importance to the Holy Roman Empire and because this line had produced some key military figures. The Lords of Pappenheim were awarded the title of Erbreichsmarschalle (or Hereditary Imperial Generals) for the Holy Roman Empire.

Since this Haupt line was established at the time surnames were first being used (late 1000's), all Haupts are descended from these Haupts of Pappenheim. The Rheinland Haupt clan migrated from the Pappenheim area about the 1530's. Pappenheim became a protestant village in 1530 since it was governed by the Protestant Ansbach territory and Protestant Middle Franconia by the Protestant Hohenzollern Dynasty.
