Former Utah Citizen Dies
William Culmer Succumbs Following Operation in California
William Fred Culmer, 61, a former resident and well known business man of Salt Lake, died Thursday at his home in Glendale, Cal.
Mr. Culmer was secretary of the Elks club for several years, later served as manager of the Culmer's Paint and Glass company of this city and was identified with various other interests of the Culmer family. In 1911 he organized the Culmer Oil and Gas Company, which operated throughout Utah and Idaho, in which he served as general manager until 1920, when ill health compelled him to retire.
For six weeks prior to his death, Mr. Culmer had been seriously ill from stomach ulcers. Although an operation was attempted, he failed to recover.
Mr. Culmer was born in Salt Lake, September 14, 1873, the son of William Harrison and Sarah Jane Butters Culmer. His father still survives. He attended the public schools of Salt Lake, and was a graduate of the first engineering class at the Utah State Agricultural college.
He is survived by his father, his widow and a daughter, Mrs. Constance Olpin of Salt; a stepson, Clifford Jennings; a brother, A. B. Culmer of Bellingham, Wash., and two sisters, Mrs. Pearl C. Lynn and Mrs. Hazel Hinman, of Seattle.
The body will be brought to Salt Lake for funeral services and interment.
Parents: William Harrison and Sarah Jane Butters Culmer.
Secretary of the Salt Lake Elks Club, manager of the Culmer's Paint & Glass Company and organized the Culmer Oil & Gasoline company.
Survivors include his father and wife.
