CENTRALIA — Mort Jake Beal, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died at 11:05 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2010, at Centralia Manor.
He was born on Feb. 1, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Alva Jake Beal and Bessie (Whitson) Beal. He married Wilhelemine Correll on Oct. 8, 1940, and she survives in Mt. Vernon.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Beal is survived by his daughters, Elsie Braddy and husband Jack of Mt. Vernon and Trudy Hartley of Georgetown, Ky.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Beal and wife Jean of Mt. Vernon; and a sister, Lillie Arnett of Texico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, seven brothers and a grandson.
He was a farmer, heavy equipment operator and mechanic. He served as a former road commissioner of Rome Township, was a former Democratic precinct chairman, a member of Boyd Christian Church and an avid Cardinals fan.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix with Jim Watts officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation and will be accepted at Osborn Funeral Home, P.O. Box 130, Dix, IL, 62830.
