Statesboro, Ga. - Mr. Hubert Paul "Chick" Jones Jr., age 89, died peacefully at home on August 13, 2009. The native of Statesboro was born to the late Mary Beth Smith Jones and H.P. Jones Sr. He graduated from Statesboro High School, Georgia Military College and Vanderbilt University. He served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard minesweepers, including the USS Minivet. He remained a Navy-man at heart and attended many mine warfare and Minivet reunions over the years.

After the war, Mr. Jones returned to Statesboro to join his family business, H.P. Jones & Son Gulf Oil Distributors. He was a founding member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president in 1966. He was a life member of the Statesboro Lions Club and the Georgia Oilmen's Association. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Edna Mae Ziegler Jones; and their son, Hubert Paul Jones III. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Connie Lee Jones of Statesboro; two daughters, Beth Jones and Woodie Jones Wisebram, her husband, Steve, grandson, Witt Wisebram, and granddaughter, Harden Wisebram, all of Atlanta; a brother, J.E. Jones, and his wife, Ursula, of Warner Robins, Ga.; his stepdaughter, Stacey Strickland; and her son, Deven, of Millen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was devoted to his family, keeping in touch with cousins near and far, his church and his country.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 15, from 4-6 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, August 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
