American Revolution soldier
-----------------
Captain Aaron Coe was born in Middletown (now Middlefield), CT, Feb. 16, 173081, when a lad of ten years went to Durham, CT, with his parents, where he resided until the spring of 1774, and then removed to Granville, MA, where he was a prosperous farmer and became one of the most prominent men of his generation, in the civil, religious, and military life of the town.

On Dec. 10, 1754, he was deeded by his father Ephraim Coe, land with a dwelling house thereon in Durham; and on May 2, 1774, being then of Granville, MA, he sold property in Durham. (Durham Land Records, vol. 6, p. R72, and vol. 8, p. 249.) In the US Census of 1790 he is called "Dea. Aaron Coe" of Granville, and was head of a family consisting of two males over sixteen years, four males under sixteen years, and three females.

During the Revolution he was an ardent patriot, both at home and in the field. On Apr. 26, 1776, he was commissioned captain of the fifth company in Col. John Moseley's Hampshire Co. regiment of Mass. militia. He was in active service with his company Oct. 1-Nov. 17, 1776, and Dec. 28, 1776-Mar. 28, 1777, at Fort Ticonderoga, reinforcing the Northern army then commanded by Gen. Wayne; also served with his company Sept. 1-Oct. 8, 1777, reinforcing the Northern army under Gen. Gates. (Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution.) Deacon Aaron Coe narrated this story to his son who subsequently narrated it to my great grandfather Lt Jerome Hadden Coe, MD (1843-1931), taking a morning constitutional, came in had(?) to General Gates and failed in proper military etiquette, incurred the General's wrath and received a severe flogging with his cane. News of the beating came to Captain Aaron Coe, and he proceeded to General Gate's tent and took him to task for his unmilitary and unlawful act. Capt Coe, age 47 years of age at that time and a much respected and one of the most prominent citzens of Granville, Mass. no doubt felt himself, barring the difference in rank, an equal of General Gates and did not spare words of condemnation. Subsequently, General Gates asked for the Captain's sword and put him under arrest. This, becoming known to the regiment, created a storm of indignant protest. They responded with a soldier said (saying), "General, your act has made the men furious. Such threats are made that I consider your life in danger, that the men say if you do not release the Captain before night fall, there will be dread of bullet holes in your marque before morning." The general had already repented his rash act so that the Captain's sword was returned and he was released from arrest. (note: Narrator, Dr Jerome Hadden Coe was the son of Seymour Coe Jr 1815-1897 and Deborah Jane Hadden 1818-1909. Dr Jerome Coe was the great grandson of Capt Aaron Coe)

During this latter service he took part in the Saratoga campaign which resulted in the capture of Gen. Burgoyne's army, Oct. 17, 1777, the turning point of the war. Capt. Coe died at Granville, Mass., Oct. 30, 1794,-and was buried with military honors.

He married first, in Durham, CT, Nov. 28, 1754, Phebe Parsons, born in Durham Sept. 13, 1732, daughter of Ithamar Parsons; she died at Granville, MA, Sept. 80, 1774. He married second, in Granville, MA, Jan. ft(?), 1776, Mary Seward, born at Granville, Mar. 14, 1750, daughter of Ebenezer Seward; she died at Granville, Mass., June 8, 1808. In the Mass. Direct Tax for 1798 she was rated at Granville as "Mary Coe, widow," for thirty acres of land valued at $94; also with her child Chester a Coe for a house and twenty-four acres of land valued at $580.80.
