TWO DROWN WHEN BOAT CAPSIZES.
H. C. Moreland and Son-in-Law Pat Shane, Victims of Tragedy
Were Fishing on Lake in UP near St. Ignace
This community was shocked beyond words last Sunday, August 31, when word reached here of the accidental death at 9:10 A. M. by drowning of Harold Moreland, 47, local decorator and businessman, and his son-in-law, Pat Shane, 30, of Ozark, Michigan.
According to the eye-witness account of the tragedy by Robert Schrot, 27, another son-in-law of Mt. Pleasant, who was also in the aluminum boat with the two victims, the trio went to Frenchman Lake near the town of Trout Lake in the Upper Peninsula 30 miles northwest of St. Ignace, and had been fishing only about 30 minutes when the two men, who had been standing up, suddenly plunged into the water, capsizing the craft and throwing Schrot into the water.
Mr. Moreland, who had been a resident of Laingsburg for about five years, previously lived on a farm near Pittsburg. He operated a paint and wallpaper store here in addition to his work as a painter and decorator, and also served as assistant mail carrier on R.F.D. No. 1 out of Laingsburg. He attended the Methodist Church and was a member of Orion Lodge No. 402, I.O.O.F. in which he served in several official capacities, the last being Past Grand.
Mr. and Mrs. Moreland were married June 1, 1946 and lived in their own modern apartment here.
The bodies arrived at the Galligan Funeral Home Tuesday forenoon and lay at rest there until 1 P.M. Thursday, September 4, when a brief family service, at which Rev. Ralph Brown officiated, followed by the Odd Fellow ritual, was conducted before the funeral cortege, bearing both victims. began its long journey to Fork Cemetery, just north of Barryton, Mich, which is 30 miles north of Mt. Pleasant, where the Odd Fellow graveside services will be conducted. Members of the I.O.O.F. will serve as pallbearers.
Surviving Mr. Moreland are his wife, Fern; one brother Forest, in Pennsylvania; and one daughter Clara Belle, by a previous marriage.
