At the age of five years old, Maggie was raised by Isaac and Mary Ely who lived in Fidelity, Jersey, Illinois. She lived in his household as one of the family, and lived there until she married George Hardy in Nov 27, 1888.

Maggie's parents, John Blotna and his wife, Mary C. Smith migrated to the US from Germany, and settled in New Orleans, LA around 1850. They had two children; John Blotney and Maggie Blatney.

John Blatna died about 1851, probably by Yellow Fever. His wife, Mary C. Smith re-married to a Mr. Ruker/Rucker, and they had a daughter, Mary Josephine Ruker, sister to John Jr. and Maggie.

The children were farmed out when Mary C. Smith-Blotna-Ruker died about 1855 - Maggie was five years old.
