Suggested edit: (Sources of information: "Captain Benjamin Merrill and the Merrill Family of North Carolina", by William E. Merrell, viewable on Ancestry.com., Thomas A. Merrell appearing on pages 56 and 62. 1850 US Census, Dallas Co. Texas, shows Tom age "0" residing with his widowed mother. Contemporary newspaper accounts of murders - Dallas "Daily Herald" 4 Jan 1885, El Paso "Daily Times" 29 May 1885. Arkansas Marriage records showing Tom "resident of Nolan TX" marrying Susie Burch, viewable on Ancestry.com. A possible motive for the murders appears in "John Selman - Texas Gunfighter" by southwest historian Leon C. Metz, in which the author cites a manuscript attributed to a old Buffalo Hunter named Glenn Skelton, but with the caution that Skelton does not offer evidence of his claims. The tombstone birthdates for both Tom and wife are certainly suspect.
