CHAPTER XXI.

The first Settler in what is now Soldier Township, and in fact the first white man to locate on the Soldier River between Preparation and Ida Grove, was H. A. Agnes, who came here in March 1858 and settled on the SE 1/4 Section 4, ..he erected a log cabin and broke about fifteen acres of ground. He was followed by his family, his wife and seven children, in June of the same year. He had come here from St. Clair County, Michigan and entered 320 acres of land here where he made his home until his death, September 9, 1888. His wife following him to the great "hereafter" in June 1889. His children reside in the township and carrying on the farming operations.

Note: Henry Agens was born (Oct 9, 1812) in New Jersey, and moved to St. Clair County, Michigan with his parents. He was living in Michigan in 1837 and appears in Iowa in 1858, likely he went west during the homestead land rush. (He planned to join up with the Donner Party in Illinois but missed the departure date so he moved on the Iowa). He settled in Monona, Iowa and named the township St. Clair, establishing the first Post Office, of which he was postmaster for 25 years. He was married to Mary Ann Kenyon and they had 7 children born in Michigan, Julia, William, Maria, Henry, Hetty, Mary, John L., and Frances born in Iowa. (compiled from various notes)
