John Lewis Agens, 1821-1893 (update to 1897), Front St., St. Clair, Michigan, Grocer, started business here in 1856, There was a destructive fire at St. Clair, April 29, 1875. The City Exchange (book store), owned by J. L. Agens, was destroyed. The Grocery store was located at Front and Thornapple St. and was destroyed by fire in 1892.

His father came to St. Clair in 1834 with his hound dog and possibly his son, Henry. Henry purchased land in 1837.

Married Harriet 'Hattie' Woodruff Eagle (Egles) Nov 1843 in New Jersey. He and his family arrived in St. Clair about 1854 and started his business (1856). They had 4 daughters, Harriet (Mrs. Charles Westcott) 1849-1937, Caroline 'Carrie' (Mrs. Herbert M. Harrington) 1856-1932 in Delaware, Nettie C. (Mrs. F. B. Sutton), Alice (Allie) (Mrs. Charles Sheldon) 1863-1895.

John L. Agens Dead - St. Clair - June 10, John L. Agens, an old and highly respected citizen of St. Clair, died at his home at 7 o'clock this morning. Mr. Agens came to this city in the early part of the century. He started in business in 1856, and continued the same up to 1892, when his place of business burned.
