Family legend says that Battle was named after a Dr. Battle in Sandersville, who brought the gift of a silver cup with the names Battle and Sparks engraved on it at his birth.

From obituaries published in the Atlanta Constitution and Fitzgerald Herald:
Battle Sparks died after an illness of several years' duration. He chose as his lifework a banking career, spanning for nearly half a century. He had served as cashier of banks in Sandersville, Waynesboro, Gainesville and Fitzgerald, and once was national bank examiner. His failing health caused him to leave the bank for outside work and for about two years he was connected with the Federal Seed Loan Agency. His continued illness however made his complete retirement necessary. He was a Shriner and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Fitzgerald where he had resided for 10 years.
Battle Sparks, a native of Sandersville, was the son of the late Thomas H. Sparks and Patsy Mathis Sparks. Survivors were: wife, Mrs. Annie Cooley Sparks; two daughters, Miss Patsy Sparks, Columbus, and Mrs. David Dobbs, College Park, Ga; one sister, Mrs. Mamie Sparks; granddaughter, Miss Shelly Dobbs, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held in Sandersville at the Baptist Church, the Rev. R.C. Brown, Pastor, and the Rev. Carey T. Vizant, Pastor of the Fitzgerald Baptist Church conducted services. Among the pallbearers were Dr. George Kirkley(Kirby), Charles Bradshaw, and S.G. Pryor, Jr. or Fitzgerald. Local pallbearers were Julian H. Evans, Ed Sullivan and Findlay Irwin, Sr. He was a much loved Fitzgerald citizen.
Funeral arrangements were in charge of M and M Funeral Home.

Battle Sparks was married to Annie Cooley on 26 Jun 1912 in Washington County, Georgia
