Harding E. Nix, 83, of Winter Street in Claremont, NH died Saturday (February 26) at Valley Regional Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born in Waltham, MA, on February 12, 1928, a son of George and Selina Violetta (Hagar) Nix and had been a Claremont resident since 1963 moving here from Cochituate, MA. He grew up in the Annapolis Valley and New Glasgow, Nova Scotia areas. At the age of 18, Nix came to the United States and joined the US Army on March 15, 1946. One of the places he was stationed was Hawaii. He talked about that a lot and mentioned going under the Golden Gate Bridge and how amazing it was to look up and see the bottom of the bridge, and also being seasick! On April 26, 1952, he married the former Blanch Schmerbauch in Granite City, IL; she predeceased him on June 14, 2010. Nix and Blanch met in St. Louis when they were roller skating. He was employed as a pattern maker by General Steel Castings in IL. Nix and Blanch moved to Massachusetts and then to New Hampshire in 1963. He said that New Hampshire was God's country. He and his wife owned and operated Nix's store on Cornish Road for many years. Nix was the caretaker for the Upham Estates in Claremont and also worked as a logger. He enjoyed gardening, watching hockey, polka music, riding his bicycle, and woodworking. He made several pieces of furniture that his family continues to enjoy. Members of his family include a daughter, Judith and her husband, Herbert; a son, Charles and his companion, Elizabeth; three grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one niece, one great niece and one great nephew. He was predeceased by a son, James H Nix in 2007 and a brother, George Gardner Nix in 2000.
