Luther Columbus Mitchem was a son of Joseph B. Mitchum and Barbara Ann Smith Mitchem of Gaston Co., NC. He was married on 3/24/1874 to Gabrilla Flowers. They were the parents of seven children:
1. John F. Mitchem b. and d. 1876;
2. Julia Etta Mitchem 1879 - 6/29/1956 (m. 10/10/1897 Robert Franklin Dellinger);
3. Hattie Mitchem 10/15/1880 - 7/20/1935 (m. John Waisner);
4. Ferrie Lee Mitchem 6/20/1884 - 4/26/1972 (m. Henry Jacob Coon and m. Andrew Jackson Greer);
5. Archie Hill Mitchem (twin) 1/6/1886 - 1949 (m. 9/19/1907 Margaret Logan Arrowood);
6. Harvey Will Mitchem (twin) 1/6/1886 - 2/17/1953 (m. 10/14/1907 Mary Frances Hull); and
7. Oscar Luther "Toogie" Mitchem 11/22/1890 - 7/1/1945 (m. 12/31/1926 Mary "Teaberry" Parker 1900 - 1944.
Luther Mitchem was an architect by trade and was instrumental in the design of the original Courthouse (now Museum) at Dallas, NC. He had an office in Salisbury, NC as well as in Gaston County, NC. He died as the result of gangrene in his leg after having been thrown from his horse. His siblings were David Worthly Mitchem, Lowell, NC; James Oates Mitchem, Belmont, NC, and Mary Ann Mitchem Allen, Dallas, NC.
