Capt. Edward Fettyplace, Jr. was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts. A son of Edward Fettyplace, Esq. and Elizabeth Hinds, he was raised in the Fettyplace mansion at 19 Orne Street, Marblehead. He was baptized at First Congregational Church, father of seven children, and was married to Jane Williams, daughter of William and Mary Williams of Marblehead. They resided in Marblehead, Newburyport and Salem.

Capt. Fettyplace died in Salem. His Salem residence was near the Salem Custom House. His headstone is in the Fettyplace cluster of stones on Old Burial Hill.

He was a co-owner with Benjamin Watson of the firm Fettyplace & Watson, Commercial Merchants, 44 India Wharf, Boston, 1801-1825. He owned Cat Island (Children's Island) a small island off Little Harbor in Marblehead, which came to him through his wife's family.

Active in the defense of the coastline during the Rev. War, his Rev. War service was commendable and his dates of service are recorded in Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War. Volume 5, page 641.

Fettyplace, Edward, Jr. Petition dated Boston, May 26, 1777, signed by Samuel Russell Gerry, in behalf of himself and others, of Marblehead, owners of the schooner "Dolphin" (privateer), asking that said Fettyplace be commissioned as commander of said schooner; ordered in Council May 26, 1777, that a commission be issued; also, Captain; list dated Marblehead, Dec. 15, 1777, of prisoners at Halifax, comprising Capt. Fettyplace, Jr., and crew, to be exchanged for British prisoners; said Fettyplace to be exchanged for Capt. James Tate; also, petition dated Boston, Feb. 6, 1782, signed by Nehemiah Somes, in behalf of Tristram Dalton and others, of Newburyport, asking that said Fettyplace be commissioned as commander of the ship "Antelope" (privateer); ordered in Council Feb. 6, 1782, that a commission be issued.
